In this article, you will learn what categories are, how to create them in the editor, and how to assign individual products to them in your online store.
Categories are product groups, usually sharing a common characteristic. These could be men's or women's clothing, shoes, watches, or toys. Products can be placed in multiple categories at once. For example, a "women's winter jacket" can be included in categories like "women's clothing," "winter clothing," and "jackets." This feature makes product management easier for you and helps your customers navigate your store.
Category Management
1. To manage categories, click on the Products button in the top menu of the editor.
2. Next, click on Manage Categories at the bottom left.
3. In this window, you can edit, add, assign products to, or delete categories. You can access individual categories by clicking on the category name in the left column.
Creating a New Category
1. You can add a new category by clicking Add category at the top right. Enter the category name and confirm by clicking Create.
2. You can add existing products to the newly created category by clicking Assign products.
3. A search window will now appear, where you can enter the name of the product you want to add to the category. You can also scroll through the product list using the slider.
TIP: If you want to create a new product, click on Products in the top menu, then click Add Product. Detailed information on creating new products can be found in the article How to Add a Product.
You can delete a category by clicking the Delete category button. In the window of a specific category, you can also remove products from the category by clicking the X that appears when you hover over the product. This will not delete the product from the store, only from the category you are currently working with.
If you want to change the category name, click on the name in the specific category window and enter a new one.
Creating a Subcategory
This feature allows you to create multiple levels of categories. In the product listing, where filtering is enabled, a maximum of three levels will be displayed. More levels are only visible in the editor and are designed to improve management and organization within the store.
If a product is in a subcategory, it is not automatically added to the parent category. However, a product can be placed in several categories or subcategories.
A subcategory cannot be placed under more than one parent category. If you want the same subcategory to appear under multiple categories, you need to create it multiple times with the same or similar name.
When a parent category is removed, its subcategories become the parent categories.
You can create a subcategory from an existing category by dragging it under the selected parent category.
