How to change the name of a custom or project domain

This guide provides information about changing the name of a custom or project domain. In general, the name of a custom or project domain cannot be changed; however, there are several alternative options that may help resolve the situation.

A project domain can be recognized by the presence of “webnode” in the name, for example: myproject.webnode.com. A custom domain, on the other hand, does not include “webnode” in the name, such as myproject.com.

Project domain

A project domain name cannot be changed, as it serves as a unique identifier of the project. An option is to create a new project from scratch and choose the desired name. Keep in mind that the new project must be manually built from the beginning, as transferring content between projects is not possible.

NOTE: If the project domain name you choose is already taken, a number will be added to it, such as myproject1.webnode.com

An ideal solution is to register a custom domain. This way, the project name becomes invisible to the public (it will only be visible in the project administration). You can find more information about registering a custom domain in the guide How to Register Your Own Domain. Using a custom domain for your project requires an active premium plan. You can purchase one by following the guide How to Purchase Premium Services. A custom domain will also make your website easier for customers to remember and will be rated better by search engines

TIP: When you purchase the Mini, Standard, Profi, or Business plan for the first time, you’ll receive an email with a discount coupon for a free 1-year domain registration. Premium services are activated automatically.

Custom domain

In the case of a custom domain, likewise the name cannot be changed. However, you can register a new domain for your project and set it as the primary domain. See the article How to Set Your Purchased Domain as Primary Domain for more information.

You won’t need to rebuild your site from scratch or purchase a second premium plan. However, you will need to pay for the new domain. Domain pricing can be found on our price list

TIP: If you’re only interested in renaming individual pages on your website, follow the guide How to change a name of pages on your site.

TIP: If you want to change the website name (the part that appears on a browser tab), see the guide How to change the website name
